Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs D. Northern.

This course is for students who enjoy exploring the way communication through print, social media and television or streaming platforms, have an effect on our society.

You will learn about how language is used to inform us of local and global events as well as how different platforms can be used in differing ways to give us a deeper understanding of the issues that affect our lives.  You will also look at how language is used to convince and entertain us and how these techniques can also be used in a negative way.

Classes will involve the study of a range of media used to communicate the news. You will apply this knowledge to the creation of your own work and learn the format and requirements relative to several different genres of media. You may create your own media publication such as a web page, an online newspaper or short documentary.

All junior English courses are based around general themes so that you can choose a theme or genre of text that interests you, and through this genre, learn and develop your English skills. All courses teach how to write a literary essay and to analyse texts such as film, poetry and novels. This also involves you learning to identify, analyse and to use, visual and verbal language techniques.  However, in this course, you will do this through the study and creation of texts in the media.
