NCEA Level 1 Science

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs R. Blair.

Developing Scientific skills is crucial to thriving in a changing world. Many of the major challenges that confront our world need to be approached from a scientific perspective.

In this Science course, you will study Chemistry, Biology, Physics, and Space standards; building on the knowledge you have gained in the last two years.

In all of the standards studied, you will develop practical skills, and the internal assessments you complete will be based on practical experiments.

Topics include Mechanics, Genetics, Chemical reactions, Micro-organisms, and Astronomy.

What will I learn in Level 1 Science?

You will;

  • Investigate how different factors affect the rate of chemical reactions

  • Study different chemical reactions

  •  Perform a practical investigation that demonstrates an understanding of physics or biological ideas

  •  Explore how genes control the inheritance of characteristics

  •  Be able to explain the causes of genetic variation

  • Understand  Earth in space

  • Mechanics in Physics

This course is a required pathway to the senior sciences in years 12 and 13.
