In this English course, students will explore the different ‘lenses’ through which we can interpret a range of literature. Students will be self-directed in much of their study, and have choice into their ‘lens’ that they use to guide their learning. Students may choose to explore literature through a cultural view, a feminist view, a psychological view, or even through a classist view (as examples). Students will look at a range of classical and/or contemporary texts and explore the impact literature has on society, alongside how it also reflects the society in which it is created and can at times be considered timeless. A significant element of this course is that the course, and standards entered into, are personalised to each student, based on interests and needs. However, there will be a common internal assessment for the class, as well as a common external assessment. Learning in this English course will be explored through both making meaning of a range of texts, as well as creating meaning to express new ideas in a range of forms (e.g. writing, oral presentations, static images etc).
Students who take Mirror, mirror will most likely be interested in exploring different theories and different ways we can interpret language and literature, and will most likely be interested in developing their appreciation for literature.
Successful completion of this Level Three English course can help towards meeting the requirements for University Entrance.
In this course a range of standards, internal and external, will be offered, and what is offered will be personalised where appropriate to meet the interests and needs of individual students. There will be a minimum of 18 credits on offer, and at least 4 credits will be from an externally assessed standard. Potential standards that will be focused on in this course are listed.

Recommended Prior Learning
The recommended prior learning to take this course in 2021 is to have achieved a minimum of three Level Two English Achievement Standards, and the student must have attempted at least one externally assessed Level Two English standard. Entry with other than this recommended prior learning will be at the HOD English discretion - the student must see the HOD English to discuss entry without having completed this prior learning.

Only students engaged in learning and achievement derived from Te Marautanga o Aotearoa are eligible to be awarded these subjects as part of the requirement for 14 credits in each of three subjects.
