Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr D. HUTCHINSON

The students will have 3 compulsory Media Studies courses (for UE entrance) + the choice of one extra topic that interests them.


COMPULSORY COURSES


FILM DESIGN

Design and create a socially responsible film that aims to highlight a topical issue. (10 credits over 2 standards).


MEDIA REPRESENTATION

In what way does the things we watch or read reinforce stereotypes or create pressure for change? The course asks you to analyse how people, events or issues are shown to us in the media. (3 credits)


SOCIAL CHANGE VLOG (Media text) / PIECE OF JOURNALISM

Either

1. Become the author of a blog/vlog that promotes a topical issue, educates the public using corroborated sources and aims to create change in society, or

2. Write a piece of journalism that you would like to have published. (3 writing credits)


STUDENT CHOICE FROM:


ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Undertake an environmental action that examines the student's role in eating food in a sustainable way (food miles, vegetarianism, packaging etc). (6 reading credits)


HUMAN RIGHTS INQUIRY

Research and submit your findings in relation to a current human rights issue in the world. (6 reading credits)


SOCIAL ACTION

Identify something that is wrong in our society and try to bring about real change to policy to make a big difference to people's lives. (6 reading credits)
