NCEA Level 1 Geography

Course Description

This course essentially enables you to better understand the world around you. Geography combines the knowledge and skills of a range of subjects including Science, Social Studies, Mapping skills, Politics, Economics, Maths and English.

By the end of the course at Level 1 you will be able to:

  • read and interpret maps
  • know what causes earthquakes and understand the impacts these events have on people. 
  • know what New Zealand society will be like in the coming decades and how to adapt yourself and your future goals to attain success in that new society
  • learn about sustainability. We focus on sustainability initiatives that you can undertake to allow you to better adapt to a changing world that maps a way towards a more sustainable future for you, your family, New Zealand and the planet as a whole.
  • develops your literacy ability focusing on writing skills 
  • Form opinions about  issues that are relevant to New Zealand and the world.

Overall Geography is a fun and interesting course being taught by a teacher who is passionate about the subject. Geography gives you general knowledge of the world, how it works physically, socially and economically and provides you with the knowledge and skills needed by all citizens as we head into an uncertain future and the issues that we face going forward.


Recommended Prior Learning

Students who take Geography at Level 1 should have enjoyed and engaged in Social Studies courses in Years 9 and 10.

Pathway

The Geographic skills you learn will be useful in the 'real world'. The ability to read a weather map, know how to interpret statistics are but two examples of these really useful skills.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
